Conserving Today, So Birds Can Soar Tomorrow

Conservation Activities

  • Advocacy: Our committee follows actions and policies that may impact environmental issues in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and the State. Actions may take the form of testifying at official hearings, attendance and presentations at public input forums, communications with agencies regarding issues of impact, editorial pieces for local publications and the Bay Journal, and notices to members via the Baltimore Bird Club Facebook and Instagram groups or E-Mails.

  • Habitat Protection: We work to preserve and improve bird habitats in parks, urban areas, and natural spaces around Baltimore. Sometimes this includes organizing clean-ups, invasive species removal, or advocating for bird-friendly city policies.

  • Collaboration: Partnerships and shared memberships with other environmental groups such as the Baltimore County Green Alliance. We also strive to have BBC member representatives as members of various “Friends” groups of local parks and places of interest to birders such as Oregon Ridge Park, Cromwell Valley Park, Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, Patterson Park, Masonville Cove and Hart-Miller Island. We support MOS in their conservation efforts when requested. You can view the MOS conservation page here

  • Education and Outreach: We hold bird walks, lectures, workshops, and publish newsletters to teach people about birds, conservation, and the environment.

  • Support for Young Birders: We also promote programs for young birders to get them involved in bird conservation early.

  • Lights Out Baltimore: One of our conservation projects, Lights Out Baltimore, aims to reduce bird collisions with buildings by advocating for lights to be turned off at night during migration seasons.

  • Citizen Science: The BBC participates in surveys like the Christmas Bird Count, Breeding Bird Atlas, and other bird monitoring programs. These activities provide important data for conservation research.

  • Member Involvement: We are always looking for input and participation from our members on a specific area of interest to you, as a regular committee member (we meet 7 – 9 times per year) or to simply alert the committee to something you think we should be aware of. Contact the committee chair for information.
